The Royal Artillery Museum is a registered charity, overseen by a Board of Trustees who have a wide range of experience, including museums, tourism, marketing and business.
They are supported by a small team of four full-time and four part-time staff. We also have a growing team of dedicated volunteers who help us with every aspect of our work. Please do get in touch with us if you think you might like to get involved.
Martin takes care of our day to day operations (which focus on developing, caring for and making accessible the collection) and manages our staff and facilities at Wood Road, Larkhill, Netheravon and Amesbury. He is also responsible for developing the plans for our future museum, managing a large team of consultants and contractors. Martin has worked in museums and heritage for 25 years, including English Heritage’s Stonehenge visitor centre project.
Adrian looks after our collection, making sure it is properly accounted for, managed and conserved, and that our procedures and documentation meet the very highest museum standards. He is responsible for our collections stores and all of our conservation work (whether it is in our own workshop or elsewhere), as well as managing our attendance at external events. Adrian is a Gunner Veteran, having served in every corner of the world during his 22 years with the Royal Artillery, and is apparently the only member of staff who can drive an AS90.
Phil is our subject matter expert when it comes to the history of artillery, and is regularly called on to answer cannon-related questions from colleagues and general public alike. He is responsible for researching, assessing and documenting our collection, and developing proposals for conservation and restoration projects. Phil joined the team after 20 years with the Royal Armouries, where he was their Curator of Artillery, based at Fort Nelson alongside the Railway Howitzer that is on loan from our collection.
Sian looks after our archives and library. She is responsible for preserving, cataloguing and managing the huge number of documents, photographs and books in our care. Sian also makes this incredible historical resource accessible to historians and the general public by managing our document research service and coordinating visits to our archive facilities by researchers. Sian is a lifelong professional archivist, and joined us after working at a number of high-profile archives in London.
Sonjeev is responsible for all of our financial management, payments, accounting and the annual audit. He is also RAM’s Company Secretary, acting as secretary to the RAM Board of Trustees. Sonjeev is the longest-serving member of our team, having joined the museum while it was still based in Woolwich.
Declan is involved in all aspects of our collections management, with a particular interest in our conservation and refurbishment of artillery pieces. He also contributes to our attendance at external events as well as our public open days at Wood Road, helping to bring our collection to a wider audience. Declan previously owned and managed a model shop for nearly 13 years, and before that served 22 years as an infantry soldier in the Royal Green Jackets.
Ali is the newest member of our team, and is helping us to restart our oral history project, planning and coordinating video interviews with Royal Artillery veterans and others with artillery-related stories to tell. She also assists with our document research service and a wide range of other activities in our archives. Ali joined us after working in the archives at the Science Museum’s National Collections Centre.
Jo is at the centre of our operations, and the first point of contact for most people who phone, email or visit us at Wood Road. She manages all of our office systems, as well as our guided tours and public open days at Wood Road. Jo also runs our collections management system (the database listing everything in our collection), administers the huge number of loans to museums and other organisations around the country, and ensures that there is always a supply of tea and biscuits for our volunteers.
James Barnes is a commercial real estate solicitor, and until 2016 was a Partner at Herbert Smith where he specialised in structured investment, development, infrastructure and property finance. He has worked on many major projects, including the Design Museum, Stratford Olympic Facilities, Tate Modern and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
Graham Beal is a Partner in Ernst & Young's Lead Advisory practice, and has 25 years of experience of working on the interface between public and private businesses and of complex procurement, finance raising and outsourcing. He has worked on a number of MOD projects including development of Corsham and RAF Northolt, Search and Rescue Helicopter procurement and the £1bn Future Provision of Marine Services project.
Graham is Deputy Chairman of RAM and also the Chair of our Finance and Risk Committee.
Peter Carson is House and Events Manager at Englefield Estate, managing a range of commercial activities across the historic house, gardens and wider estate. His extensive experience of heritage and attractions management includes 10 years as General Manager of Stonehenge and a period working internationally for Tussaud’s Group.
Peter is a member of our Development Committee.
Nick Eeles held a succession of senior Army appointments including General Officer Commanding Scotland and Director Royal Artillery (the last person to hold that post), having previously served as Commanding Officer of 26th Regiment RA.
Nick has been Chairman of the Royal Artillery Museum since 2016, and also chairs our Development Committee and Collections Management Committee, having previously been Chair of Trustees of the Royal Artillery Historical Trust.
Tom Foss-Smith joined the Royal Artillery in 1998, gaining operational experience in Iraq, Cyprus and Afghanistan. His staff roles at Army Headquarters initially focussed on artillery capability development, and he is now the Army lead for the Boxer Armoured Personnel Carrier.
Tom was formerly the Chair of Trustees of the Royal Artillery Historical Trust.
David Greenwood was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1978, gaining operational experience in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Following a number of staff posts at Army Headquarters, and a period as Defence Attaché Korean Peninsula, he served as Chief of Staff to the Adjutant General, before leaving the Army in 2014.
David is a member of our Audit, HR and Remuneration Committee.
Simon Hawkes
Simon Hawkes is a senior business executive with over 35 years experience of major retail and commercial projects, and has been involved in the loyalty and rewards sector since 2003.
Simon is Chair of our Audit, HR and Remuneration Committee and a member of our Development Committee.
Sam Jolley is Curator and Head of Collections at the Royal Logistic Corps Museum, responsible for all aspects of collections development, management and conservation. Sam oversees outreach, research visits and archive enquiries, as well as the Museum’s popular programme of temporary exhibitions. Sam has previously worked at the Royal Engineers Museum and the Imperial War Museum, in addition to a spell in historical publishing.
Sam is a member of our Collections Management Committee.
Chris Masheder is Commanding Officer of 19th Regiment RA (The Scottish Gunners), recently equipped with Archer 155mm howitzers. He has previously served with both 29th Commando Regiment RA and 40th Regiment RA (including Op Herrick in Afghanistan). Chris also led the Royal Artillery’s support to Covid operations in the South West, before becoming Military Assistant to the Chief of Staff Field Army. Prior to assuming command of 19th Regiment RA, he worked in the Joint Force Headquarters, gaining extensive experience in the Middle East.
Mark Milligan joined the Royal Artillery in 1979, and has undertaken operational duties in Northern Ireland and Bosnia, mounted ceremonial with Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery, and a period as Commanding Officer of 14th Regiment RA. Following a number of staff posts focussed on artillery systems development and procurement, he served as Director Change in Army HQ leading the Army Change Integration Programme until leaving the Army in June 2015.

Peter Thompson joined the Royal Artillery after a university cadetship reading archaeology and anthropology at Cambridge. Following operational experience on tours of Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Bosnia and Afghanistan, and a number of staff posts, he left the regular Army in 2018 to work as a Reservist at Regimental Headquarters in Larkhill. Peter was appointed as the Royal Artillery Mess Secretary in 2022, and remains heavily involved with the Royal Artillery Historical Society.
Roz Skellorn is Marketing Director of Chalke History Festival, responsible for all aspects of the marketing campaign to promote the event, having already overseen a full rebranding exercise and website relaunch. Roz previously spent 10 years at the Tank Museum, where she planned and delivered their Communications Strategy and managed the Communications Team, responsible for traditional media, website, social media and the Museum’s famous online video content.
Peter Wragg is Chairman of Visit Wiltshire Ltd and Director of The Great West Way Ltd, both promoting tourism to Wiltshire, and also holds Board positions at Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Julia’s House, the Tourism Alliance and Radio Bath. He was previously owner of a country house hotel, following a long career in marketing for the motor industry.
